Description

The aphid genus Cinara is one of the most speciose of aphid genera. Although many species are difficult to distinguish, some do exhibit clear morphological characters. First described as “species C” by Eastop et al. (1998), Cinara stigmatica Hébert et al. 2023 has exceptionally large sclerites surrounding its spiracles and its dorsal muscle attachment plates. It is known only from species of true fir (Abies) in Japan, although an immature specimen collected in China from an unknown host bears a close genetic resemblance (BOLD 2023).

Material

The specimen data published here are those accompanying the formal establishment of the name Cinara stigmatica Hébert et al. 2023. The holotype (Figs. 1, 2) and two paratypes (Fig. 3) are deposited at the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, Tsukuba, Japan (NARO), whereas the other paratypes are deposited in the aphid collection of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, Beltsville, Maryland, United States of America (USNM-ENT) and the Ouellet-Robert Entomological Collection of the University of Montreal (QMOR).
