Specimen and Collection are new electronic open access journals devoted to micropublications, occupying no more than two published pages, and natural history specimens. Each article is based on one or several specimens deposited in a natural history collection whose associated metadata are made available freely on the database platform Canadensys.

The Specimen and Collection journals are publishing venues for professionals and amateurs of the world of natural history and taxonomy. Finally, it is now possible to publish, in a standard format, short, specimen-based articles. Currently, there are no charges for publishing in either journal.

Peer-reviewed Specimen micropublications

  • New national or provincial (state) records of a species or new host records
  • Descriptions of new forms, morphological aberrations, or an as-yet undescribed sex
  • Descriptions of single new species belonging to recently revised taxonomic groups
  • New taxon concepts, for example a new description of an already-established species based on freshly-collected material
  • Species checklists and distribution maps based on specimens
  • Other novel, specimen-based scientific observations

Collection micropublications are data papers

  • Material examined from a traditional taxonomic paper
  • Newly re-curated and/or redetermined specimen sets
  • Voucher specimens supporting ecological or other biological research
  • Specimen donations or specimen loans to or from a museum
  • Specimens collected under the auspices of a permit, during a bio-blitz, or other defined project
